Dogs are the most loved animals. From accompanying man to heaven as per mythology to going to space, dogs have held a sacred and sacrificial role across the world.
However, the rise in stray animals has led to several problems like Rabies, Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), population outburst, man-animal conflict etc, which affect day to day life of the common citizens. With an estimated population of 35 Million stray dogs, India sees 17.5 million per year cases of animal bites. As per World Health Organization (WHO), India sees 20,000/year of rabies-related death and accounts for 36% of world rabies death, which is the highest in the world. By one estimate more than 5 million stray cattle roam the countryside in India which increases due to irresponsible ownership and abandonment.
A WHO study in the 1990s showed sterilization and vaccination were the only way to deal with street animals and the threat of rabies from them. They recommend to vaccination coverage of 70% of stray population to control Rabies.
Despite sterilization and vaccination effort under Anti Rabies Vaccine (ARV) and ABC (Animal Birth Control) program in India, the challenges remain in following
- A stray dog once returned to the street become difficult to be identified at street level
- Tracking ownership of abandoned dogs
- Tracking vaccination status and coverage
- Cost of logistics, labor and operation effiency
- Unable to involve Volunteer/feeders participation
- Tracking of the entire life cycle, yearly trends, and maintain data on sex ratio digitally
